Sang Matiz is a Bay Area–based, female-led Latin band known for electrifying audiences with their insatiable Afro-Latin beats. Blending tropical rhythms with touches of funk, the group creates a unique sound that fuses catchy, syncopated melodies with flamenco-infused guitar licks. With passion, energy, and fearless creativity, Sang Matiz takes listeners on a musical journey rooted in cultural expression and rhythmic exploration.
Supported by grants from the California Arts Council and the San Francisco Arts Commission, the band released their debut album “Ship It!” and is currently producing their second record. In August 2015, Sang Matiz had the honor of opening for the legendary Cuban ensemble Buena Vista Social Club Orchestra on their final Adiós Tour, followed by a 2016 invitation to share the stage with the acclaimed Los Angeles–based band Ozomatli. Over the years, Sang Matiz has collaborated with an array of celebrated musicians from the Bay Area and beyond, including Grammy Award–winning percussionist Christian Pepin, master trumpeter Mario Alberto Silva, and singer Braulio Barrera of the Pacific Mambo Orchestra. Their musical network also includes notable artists such as Jorge Santana of Malo and Latin jazz icon Pete Escovedo.
At the heart of Sang Matiz is bandleader Yuriza Jared, a Peruvian-born multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and composer. Her musical journey began at the age of five, when her father discovered her talent after she picked up a mandolin and composed her first melody. Soon after, she embraced the traditional Andean instrument, the charango, which became one of her primary instruments.
Growing up in a deeply artistic household—her father a poet fluent in Quechua and her mother a soprano singer—Yuriza developed a profound connection to roots music. She later added guitar to her repertoire and began performing in theater productions throughout Peru. At just six years old, she was recruited by the Conservatory of Lima to further develop her musical training, which eventually led to international touring.
Today, based in San Francisco, Yuriza leads the six-piece Afro-Latin Sang Matiz, seamlessly blending traditional instruments and rhythms with contemporary Latin styles. Through their music, the band celebrates cultural heritage while pushing the boundaries of modern Latin sound.
